It seems we’re running out of advertising space (or at least good/fresh space) so now companies are eager to increase their market share in space. In 1985, Coca-Cola and Pepsi seized an opportunity to test the viability of carbonated drinks in space. Both companies benefited from the first unofficial taste test in space. Then in 2001 Pizza Hut flew with the Russian Space Agency and became the first to deliver pizza in space. Radio Shack followed with a commercial aboard the International Space Station. It featured a Russian cosmonaut opening a Father’s Day present. NASA has been reluctant to participate, but marketers say advertising could help fund scientific research.  NASA is currently working with the Bush administration to conduct an evaluation for a commercialization strategy in space.
